Dr. Md Shafiul Azam
Principal Investigator
Dr. Azam grew up in a small but beautiful town
of Bangladesh, Comilla. After completing his higher secondary
certificate at Comilla Victoria College he headed to the capital city
Dhaka, to pursue his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees at Jahangirnagar
University. In 2005, he joined the department of Chemistry at BUET as a
Lecturer and completed M.Phil. degree there under the supervision of
Prof. Al-Nakib Chowdhury. For his Ph.D. he moved to Edmonton, AB to work
with Prof. Julianne Gibbs-Davis at University of Alberta on the surface
spectroscopic studies of molecuar recognition at the solid/liquid
Interfaces. After obtaining his Ph.D. in 2013, he worked with Prof.
Qingxia Liu and Prof. Hongbo Zeng at the Canadian Centre for Clean
Coal/Carbon and Mineral Processing Technologies (C5MPT), Edmonton, AB to
study further the interesting and unique behavior of the molecules at
the confined environment of the interface. In 2014, he rejoined BUET and
started working as an Assistant Professor.
Dr. Azam has also been serving 'Canadian
Chemical Transactions' and
'Journal
of Industrial Engineering & Management' as
Editorial
Board Members since 2013 and 2017, respectively.
In addition to academic teaching and research,
Dr. Azam likes watching sports and movies on TV, listening to music, spending time with his
friends and family, and travelling new places.

Fatema Zerin
Graduate Student
Joined the group in April 2017
Fatema is a Ph.D. student in the department of
chemistry at BUET. She is also working as a senior officer at a Government
Bank. While in the Azam group, she's working on the
synthesis and characterization of novel graphene based nanomaterials for
adsorbent and biosensing applications. Fatema has obtained her B.Sc. and M.Phil. degrees from
Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) and BUET,
respectively.

Md
Jahangir Hossen
Graduate Student
Joined the group in Dec 2014 for M.Phil.
Again joined the group in April 2018 for Ph.D.
Jahangir is a Ph.D. student in this group. He completed his M.Phil.
degree from this group at BUET.
While in the Azam group, he's working on
the synthesis and mechanical properties of hydrogel nanocomposites.
During his leisure, he enjoys travelling,
playing football and spending time with his family and friends.

Mostafa
Al-Momin
Graduate Student
Joined the group in Dec 2015
Mostafa is an M.Phil. student in the
department of chemistry at BUET. He is also working as a School Teacher
at Narayanganj since 2005. While in the Azam group, he's working on the
synthesis and characterization of novel gold nanocluster for
photocatalytic degradation of textile dyes. He has
obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from Jahangirnagar University in
2003 and 2005, respectively.

Stephen Don
Sarkar
Graduate Student
Joined the group in Mar 2016
Stephen is an M.Phil. student in the
department of chemistry at BUET. He has completed his HSC from Notre
Dame College, Dhaka and B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Chemistry from Jahangirnagar
University, Dhaka. He has joined in Notre Dame College, Dhaka as a
Lecturer of Chemistry in 2012. He's working to develop a 2D crosslinker
for cross-linked polymers.
He has great affection to travelling and
photography. He also likes reading books and watching movies.

Most. Latifa Chowdhury
Graduate Student
Joined the group in Mar 2016
Latifa is an M.Phil. student in the department of chemistry at BUET. She
has completed her B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Chemistry from Eden Mahila College,
under National University. While in the Azam group, she's working on
developing new multifunctional materials for the photocatalytic removal
of dyes.
At her free time Latifa likes reading books and travelling.

Anika Auni
Graduate Student
Joined the group in Sep 2016
Anika is an M.Phil. student in the department of chemistry at BUET. She
has completed her B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Chemistry from University of Dhaka,
Dhaka. She is currently working as a lecturer in the department of
chemistry at BUET. As a member of Azam group she's been working on
synthesizing graphene based quantum dots for the selective detection of
heavy metals.
During her leisure, she enjoys gardening, crafting and spending time
with her family.

Nahida Akter
Graduate Student
Joined the group in Oct 2016
Nahida is an M.Phil. student in the department of chemistry at BUET. She
has completed her B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Chemistry from Jahangirnagar
University, Dhaka in 2011 and 2012, respectively. She is currently
working as a lecturer in the department of chemistry at BUET. While in
the Azam group, she's working on developing new silicon-based quantum
dots for the selctive detection of biomolecules.

Labiba Bushra
Graduate Student
Joined the group in Jan 2015
Labiba is an M.Sc. student. She has completed
her bachelor degree in chemistry at University of Dhaka in 2010. While
in the Azam group, she is working on the synthesis and properties of pH-
and magneto- responsive superabsorbent nanocomposite hydrogel.

Rubel Habib
Graduate Student
Joined the group in September 2016
Rubel is an M.Sc. student at BUET. He's earned his
B.Sc. degree in chemistry from Comilla University, Bangladesh in 2015.
While in the Azam group, he's been developing magnetic and non-magnetic
graphene ball filled conducting polymers for enhanced mechanical and
electrical properties.
He has great affection to travelling and photography. He also likes
reading books and religious activities.

Abdullah
Al-Mamun
Graduate Student
Joined the group in June 2017
Mamun is an M.Sc. student. He's obtained his
B.Sc. degree in chemistry from National University, Bangladesh in 2016.
While in the Azam group, he's working on the developing novel magnetic
thymine based nanomaterials for the separation of mercury and melamine.
Mamun likes travelling new places, watching sports on tv, and readling
adventure novles but above all, he likes to make his mom happy.

Bushra Upoma
Graduate Student
Joined the group in December 2017
Bushra is an M.Sc. student in the department
of chemistry. She's completed her B.Sc. degree in chemistry from Khulna University, Bangladesh in 2016.
While in the Azam group, she's been conducting research on the fabrication of
gold nanoparticles decorated magnetic graphene oxide for catalytic
reduction reactions.
Bushra's hobbies include travelling, shopping, and listening to music.
She also loves to spend her time with friends and family.

Md. Mosfeq Uddin (Nadeem)

Nadeem is an M.Sc. student in the department
of chemistry. He's completed
his B.Sc. degree in chemistry from National University, Bangladesh in 2015.
In Azam group he's been conducting his research on the fabrication of
mechanically sustainable hydrogels based on polyacrylic acid,
polyacrylamide etc.

Majharul Islam Sujan
Graduate Student

Majhar earned his M.Sc. degree in chemistry from
Azam group in 2018. His research focused on the fabrication of
graphene cross-linked biopolymers for achieving enhanced mechanical
strength.

Rajib obtained his M.Sc. degree in chemistry from Azam group
in 2018. His research included the development of novel magnetic

Md. Ferdous
Shuvo

Ferdous earned his M.Sc. degree from Azam
group in 2018. He conducted his research on graphene-based
nanostructured materials for the catalytic degradation of dyes and organic
contaminants. While working in the Azam group, he co-authored one paper
in Materials Research Express.

Salma Sultana

Salma obtained her M.Sc. in April 2017 from
this group. In her M.Sc. she worked on the synthesis of magneto- and
thermo-responsive polymers. She presented her research in the Asian
Chemical Congress, 2016.

Md. Shafiqul
Islam
Graduate Student
Joined the group in Jan 2015
Shafique is an M.Sc. student. He's obtained
his B.Sc. degree in chemistry from Jagannath University, Dhaka in 2014.
While in the Azam group, he developed a mussel-inspired
synthesis of antibacterial paper based on silver nanoparticle. A
research articles from his research fundings was published in ACS
Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering.

Abinash Chandra

Joined the group in Jan 2015
Abinash obtained his M.Sc. degree in chemistry in 2017.
While in the Azam group, he conducted research on synthesizing
cellulose nanocrystal based magnetic composite materials and studing its
application in dye removal from wastewater.
